Lochie the Hero Dog is a painted Scottie dog sculpture created for this year’s Maggie’s Glasgow Sculpture Trail by Douglas Roulston, an established Scottish artist specialising in Romanticism. From the outset, Lochie was envisioned as the Hero Dog of the trail, designed to highlight both the artwork and the beauty of Scotland. Inspired by Loch Lomond, a destination loved by people from across Scotland and beyond seeking a glimpse of the Highlands, Lochie depicts the loch itself, the surrounding waterfalls, Ben Lomond in the distance, and the iconic 5th hole of Loch Lomond Golf Course, regarded by many as spectacular. Light rays flow down Lochie’s back like a subtle cape, celebrating Scotland’s dramatic landscape. On Lochie’s chest, a heart formed from trees and bushes symbolises hope, happiness, and care—the core values of Maggie’s. Lochie reminds us that real heroes don’t wear costumes; true heroism lies in compassion.
